Have you ever walked into a home and immediately picked up on the positive energy? Maybe there wasn’t anything specific about the space you could point to, it just had an overall ‘good vibe.’
On the flip side, you may have walked into other homes and sensed that something was just a little ‘off.’ While you may not have been consciously aware of it at the time, there’s a good chance this was due to the feng shui in the home.
Hold the eye roll and stick with me…
Almost two centuries ago, chemist John Dalton proposed a theory that is now accepted by the whole scientific community — that all matter and objects are made up of particles called atoms. These atoms are vibrating at a very high level, allowing them to hold their shape even as solid objects.
So, what does this all mean?
That everything around us is made of energy! From the furniture you sit on, to the artwork on your walls, to the house structure itself.
Feng shui is simply the art of managing that energy in a way that creates an optimal environment for you and your family to thrive in.
Where did feng shui come from?
Originating more than 3000 years ago, feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging space in a way that creates harmony, balance and good fortune. The belief is that all objects in your home hold ‘chi’, which translates to energy (hence the atom reference above). By allowing this energy to flow freely through your home, you can tap into your ‘lifeforce’ and create the type of life you want for yourself.
With so many different guidelines, it can be overwhelming to know where to start with feng shui. That’s why I’ve picked out 5 of my go-to feng shui principles to incorporate into your home, so you can start creating a more harmonious space today.
1. Energize your entranceway
As the main portal for the energy flow of the home, your front door plays a very important role in feng shui. So, it’s important to ensure this gateway is inviting and facilitates the flow of chi throughout the house. The first step should be ensuring that the path leading up to the front door is clear. This means there should be no dead plants, recycling bins or old newspapers blocking the way! The same goes for the other side of the door, inside the house — it’s best to keep the entranceway as clear as possible. You should be able to imagine the energy flowing smoothly through the house like water and there should be no short, sharp patterns.
In feng shui, doors should also open inwards, not outwards, and the color of the door should correspond with the way your home faces:
North: Dark blue or black
East and Southeast: Natural wood
West and Northwest: Ochre or yellow
Southwest or Northeast: White
However, if you don’t feel like painting your door or taking it off its hinges, simply focus on ensuring your door is in good condition and that the entranceway is unobstructed.
2. Let there be light (and air!)
Natural light and good air quality are two central feng shui principles within the home. Try flooding your home with as much natural light as you can — keep your windows open as often as possible, and even if the weather isn’t cooperating, open those shades before you go to work!
You may also want to switch out thick, dark curtains with light, gauzy ones. If there are darker areas in your home, add somefull-spectrum light bulbs or additional lamps — Himalayan salt lamps can be particularly great for adding a nice, natural energy into the home (I have several)!
To improve the air quality of your home, add some air-purifying plants.
Not only will it make the air feel much fresher, but it adds an instant touch of zen to your space. Plus, indoor plants have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve your mood— which is always a win in my books! Some great air-purifying plants that thrive indoors include the peace lily, philodendron and ferns.
3. Make friends with mirrors

Feng Shui Tip ➡️ Mirrors move energy around your home in lots of different ways. And if you're a fan of Feng Shui (or even just energy!), then you'll want to know where you shouldn't be placing a mirror.⠀ ⠀ 1. In the bedroom⠀ ⠀ A mirror across from the bed can bring a third party into the relationship. Hmmmm we don't want that. Mirrors can create all kinds of illusions and attribute to insomnia. An explanation is that when we sleep our soul leaves our body and when it sees itself in a mirror at night it becomes startled and this is not good energy! I don't like the sound of that one, so it's probably best to leave mirrors out of the room altogether.⠀ ⠀ 2. On a neighbouring wall⠀ ⠀ Mirrors are a portal of energy so don't place a mirror on a wall which adjoins your neighbours house (like in a unit). You don't want any of their energy creeping in to your home!⠀ ⠀ 3. Across from clutter⠀ ⠀ Obviously mirrors reflect everything. You don't want to see 2 lots of clutter do you? The reflection should be one of calm and cleanliness. You want to attract tidy, not messy.⠀ ⠀ 4. Across from another mirror⠀ ⠀ Bouncing energy between the 2 mirrors is unsettling and frantic. You can lose perspective in your home. You'll feel more grounded when mirrors aren't reflecting each other.⠀ ⠀ 5. Across from the front door⠀ ⠀ My favourite of all time. Never put a mirror at the end of a hallway when it reflects your front door. Mirrors are known as the ‘aspirin’ of feng shui, because they can cure so many energy issues within the home! They can be used to help direct the energy flow in the home, add more natural light and make spaces look larger. However, there are are a few mirror do’s and don’ts you need to know about.
For example, it’s a great idea to hang mirrors near your entranceway, but you want to avoid hanging one that reflects you within 5 feet of entering your home — as this causes all that good chi to bounce right back out the door! You also want to stick to mostly full-length mirrors with no distorted or cracked surfaces, and hang them at a height where you can see your entire head and shoulders.
4. Finesse your furniture positioning

Many people associate feng shui with moving furniture around, and for good reason!
How you position your furniture can really impact the flow of energy in the home. The most important room in your house for feng shui positioning is your bedroom, as this is a key spot in the home for recharging your energy (as well as for love!)
Your bed should be in the commanding position in the room, facing the door, but not directly across from it. You should also have a strong, supporting wall behind the bed for protective energy along with a solid headboard (no slats or open spaces for the energy to pass through). Lastly, your bed should be ‘balanced’ by having two similar pieces of furniture on each side (preferably with matching lamps).
Another important spot in the home for feng shui is your home office or desk — as this can impact your creativity and prosperity. Like your bed, your desk needs to be in the commanding position, so you can see the door, which represents new opportunities.
I know all about this particular principle first-hand, because when I was first introduced to feng shui, I had been facing my desk towards the window, with my back towards my employees. As soon as I made the switch, my business started taking off! I had better communication with everyone on the team…it was what opened my eyes and my path towards incorporating energetic principles into everything I do!
However, I’ve come to realize that no matter which direction your desk faces, not much matters if you don’t deal with the mess, which brings me to my final principle…
5. Clear out the clutter
You don’t have to be a feng shui expert to know that excessive clutter in the home can drastically impact your mental state. At the foundation of feng shui is the idea that your home reflects your mental state. So, it makes sense that if you’ve got miscellaneous items strewn throughout the house and cupboards overflowing with stuff, you’re going to feel stressed, overwhelmed and frazzled. By creating a more harmonious environment in the home, you can lighten your mental load. So, channel your inner Marie Kondo and get decluttering!
