I didn’t grow up like most kids. Living in over eight places in five states before the age of 10, I learned to adapt to my surroundings quickly.
Blessed with a strong, free-spirited hippie for a mom who was determined to make a life for us her own way, change was our way of life. I watched her change jobs more times than I can remember until she found her love of the open road as a long-haul truck driver. Let’s just say life was interesting.
You know how you always hear some of the brightest lights burn out quickly? Well unfortunately my mothers’ life was no exception. After her passing when I was nine, I moved to Northern Virginia to live with my Grandparents and for at least my high school years, found myself in a stable and welcome home.
Although some of those experiences were tough, they fueled my deepest desires to have a home to call my own, to have a safe place to land, to be myself, to feel safe, and to connect with something bigger.
That desire for creating “my space” led to a deep need of helping others find their own safe place in the world. As a Realtor, I loved showing homes to my clients and would work tirelessly to help them find just the right fit. After handing them the keys to their new space I always felt a sense of peace, envisioning their family growing and thriving in their new environment.
As my interests grew, I began also working for a friend who had a remodeling firm and immediately realized I had found my calling! I was not longer helping people find the right home, I was now able to help people CREATE the home of their dreams. I was hooked.
Eventually my friends’ business didn’t make it through the economic downturn. Since I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else, I decided to start my own renovation company.
Our friends and family thought we were nuts. The economy was only getting worse and starting a new company in CONSTRUCTION? Probably not the brightest idea.
Despite logic, we let our desire to help homeowners fuel us into action. We didn’t understand why so many people thought renovating was difficult. We would hear story after story of renovations gone bad and knew with simple project management and quality control from design through construction, we could help homeowners create the space of their dreams…AND have fun doing it.
So my husband and I started Synergy Design & Construction and although our journey was harder than we ever could have imagined, we’re proud to have built a successful, award winning, and deeply gratifying company that feeds our soul.
Since then, I have discovered my connection with homes is much deeper than just helping people pick a pretty granite for their kitchen. Drawing on my deeply rooted spirituality and an understanding of energy and the affect that “things” in our life have on us, I slowly began to work with clients in a way that was more in tune with my own spirit and purpose in life.
As long as I can remember, I’ve had the unique ability to create a safe space for myself (I call it my “spot”) in every place that I’ve lived. Whether it was a corner of a small bedroom, at the foot of my bed, and even inside a closet, I felt compelled to create a spot where I felt grounded and connected to my source. This was my sacred place to go whenever I felt troubled or overwhelmed. I’d go there to write in my journal, to cry, to read, to nap, to pine away for a boy, but mostly, it was a place for me to empty the sadness. Whatever it was I was dealing with, my spot was there for me, and it was where I let my troubles go.
I want to help you create your own sacred space. Whether it’s just a “spot” or it’s your entire house, where every room is perfectly in balance with your energetic needs, this is my purpose, my calling, and what fuels my soul.
I write and speak about it because it’s important and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
